Smash Palace: Extreme Demolition Derby

(Alex Larioza) #1

Here’s the first game I worked on with BulletProofArcade for AddicitingGames/Nickelodeon. We finished at the begginning of this year, but I never got around to sharing it on the old forums. SmashPalace is an extereme demolition derby game featuring a location based damage system and four upgradable cars.

This is a bunch of fun!

I found a few bugs, but hey, it’s already shipped!

To say the least, Addicting has been very difficult when it comes to communication.

That was some fun demolition! And yeah – Addicting are a bit slow on the communication thing. You had a primary with them?

I don’t think it was a primary sponsorship in the traditional sense as we actually signed a contract with them to make that specific game rather than making the game and then getting them to sponsor it.

VOV!!!

Very polished too… how did you manage to get that graphics (and UI)? Also… just curious: have you used some physics engine like Nape or Box2D?

Well done @SHiLLySiT!

Short answer: we extended the hell out of FlashPunk.

We had a system setup where we could design UI in the official Flash IDE and then load the swf into the game. It’s very nifty because the Flash IDE is perfect for UI. However, there were a handful of caveats that we had to work around with the system.

As for physics, we didn’t use any existing libraries - all of it was made for the game.

EDIT: And graphics were simply 3D models created in Lightwave that were rendered out into 2D animation strips.

this is awesome! Using lightwave for the models is a great idea. Also, using polygon characters rendered out to png’s is really fun to experiment with for side scrollers.
