Community Game

I wonder if there should be a community game that shows off the features.

Link Fixes:

  1. Change description to include Android and iOS.

FlashPunk is a free ActionScript 3 library designed for developing 2D Flash, iOS, and Android games. It provides you with a fast, clean framework to prototype and develop your games in. This means that most of the dirty work is already done, letting you concentrate on the design and testing of your game.

  1. Add Flashpunk to wikipedia list of game engines.
  1. Update this list. I sent them an email but they have not responded. The links are broken.
  1. Add Flashpunk here: http://devmaster.net/devdb/engines

  2. Update this to include mobile. http://www.pixelprospector.com/the-big-list-of-game-making-tools/

  3. Post here. http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=21471.0

  4. Add Flashpunk here: https://github.com/bebraw/jswiki/wiki/Game-Engines

  5. Add FP here: http://content.gpwiki.org/index.php/Game_Engines

Why the focus on iOS and Android? I realize that it’s possible to use Flashpunk to make mobile games, but the official branch is only optimized well for desktop Flash. Until that changes I feel like it would be harmful to advertize a feature that isn’t a strength of the engine.

Jacob,

Thanks so much for the reply. This is a very good point. I always want to be truthful. My understanding was that AIR was optimized for mobile and FP ran well on air. We are just about to do our first mobile port. If FP does not do well on mobile, that will be a big problem.

From an engine and longevity stand point, FP needs to support mobile well. Has anyone done any performance tests? What do you mean by optimized? Resolutions or performance? What problems are there?

I don’t want to think about Unity–I love FP. It doesn’t go to flash. But if Unity ports to HTML5 and that can get on all the flash sites, I’m not sure what niche FP has. Again just putting it out there because it is a great discussion.

The issue is that Flashpunk’s renderer uses bitmap blitting, which, while very fast on desktop targets, has poor performance on mobile devices. @Ultima2876’s Stage3dPunk is a replacement renderer which uses hardware acceleration and (from what I’ve heard) works very well. There’s also a community effort to support an alternate renderer, though I haven’t gotten involved and can’t speak to its progress.
